I left the US a few months ago and flew out to Mexico with nothing more than a carry-on bag and a backpack. I sold and gave away the majority of my belongings so I could travel lightly. Freedom had been calling my name over the last decade, and growing up as an American kid in the 70s, I know what freedom is. I began to miss it desperately.
Many factors led to my decision to leave the country I called home for almost six decades, but the primary reason remains the same: the person occupying the White House today. Politics has become a complete circus, where rapist, criminals, pedophiles, corruption, fraud, spin doctors, and greed have overtaken Washington, D.C., like a cancer that just keeps spreading and causing a division so intense. The result is a nation turned against itself, neighbor against neighbor, while those in control remain untouched.
The rule of law no longer exists in our government, and democracy has become a memory. All the while, ordinary people are buried under restrictive laws and policies, rising costs, and constant instability, creating chaos, fear, helplessness, hunger, and desperation in our communities. And now, those in power are allowed to kill people, not just ship them off to concentration camps and torture facilities, while taking over entire countries. Meanwhile, we, the citizens, continue to follow the rules, protest peacefully, pay taxes, and buy the products and services of the ultra-wealthy, funding the very system that exploits us. I scratch my head and ask: Why are we still playing along?
It took me all of three weeks to sell my things, clean out my rental house, and prepare it for the next people. I couldn’t get out fast enough. For months before my departure, I felt like I was trapped in an abusive relationship with my own government, one that drained my energy, spirit, and hope. I lost my faith in the fight. I knew the system was not broken; it was rigged, working exactly as the government had planned, and we didn’t have a prayer. There’s a profound knowing inside when it’s time to leave a toxic situation – I’m sure you’ve all been there, when the impulse is impossible to ignore.
Leaving the US is my quiet rebellion. I’ve taken my online business and moved it to Mexico. I’m voting with my US dollars on the people and places that align with my values, freedom being at the top of the list. The current US government prioritizes profit over people, and we, the people, are their pawns – their consumers. We are making them rich. The ultimate defiance against them is to take your money elsewhere. Money is the only language they understand. Holding a sign on a corner isn’t going to move the needle in this era of greed, but selling your assets and leaving the country with your US dollars… well, that’s a different story.
Let me be clear: the U.S. government does NOT care about us. It has not been “for the people, by the people” in a very long time. They allow our children to be shot and killed while learning their alphabet and how to play with others. They allow people to die because they can no longer afford their medication after insurance premiums skyrocket. They permit unchecked rent increases that push families into an impossible affordability crisis—all in the name of greed, control, and the need to be “right.”
Where has our humanity gone? Our society has been reduced to a smash-and-grab free-for-all. It’s literally the Wild West. The rich get richer, and the poor… well, good luck.
I’m sad for my country. The hope it once promised has been stripped away for the average American, leaving people exhausted, disillusioned, and disconnected from what truly matters. But I carry a new hope and a new vision: one rooted in clarity, peace, and truth. Through my own journey, I’ve seen the light, and it is good. Much of the world beyond the U.S. is not as corrupt or upside down as we’ve been led to believe. In many places, life feels more aligned with natural and spiritual values: people are kind, communities are peaceful, and daily living is affordable. The food is cleaner, healthcare is accessible, and the well-being of children is a priority. Freedom is honored, friendliness is normal, and true work-life balance really exists! It’s not a myth. When we follow the quiet wisdom of our spirit instead of the noise of fear, we remember that a better way of living has always been available to us.
Just like I used to think, many people assume that traveling abroad is only for the wealthy. That might apply to luxury travel, but for everyday living and a better quality of life, living outside the U.S. is often far more affordable. I know. I’m doing it! I have peace, abundant resources in my neighborhood, and the friendliest neighbors who celebrate life and family. I’m finally able to build my business with clarity and focus, free from the constant drama and hustle that once hijacked my attention. I meditate again and nurture my spiritual life. My nervous system is restored, and I can give my clients my full presence and serve them the way I was always meant to.
For those who value peace and freedom, I’m creating a new series called Freedom Living. In it, I’ll share what I’ve learned, and continue to learn, while living abroad, so if you decide to make the leap, you won’t have to do it alone.
It is our sovereign right to live without daily threats, constant chaos, and fear.
Remember who you are beyond a U.S. citizen.
You are a spiritual being first.
Protect your peace and live well.
